April Dawn Daugherty

April Dawn (Jones) Daugherty was born October 11, 1974 in South Williamson, Ky to Debra Kay Wagner and Gerald Madison Jones.  In her youth she was a resident of Norfolk, Va and later attended high school in Phelps, Ky.  April married Terry Hurley of Phelps in 1993 and had one son, Austin Lee Hurley and divorced not long after.  On September 29th 1997, April married her husband of 22 years, SFC Glenn Allen Daugherty (US Army, retired) and on December 29th, 2000 she gave birth to Jacob Allen Daugherty.  In 2014, April and Al adopted their nephew, Gabriel Bruno Daugherty, son of the late Billy Robert Daugherty.

April and her family were a military family with her and Allen being stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Campbell, Ky on several occasions where they made many lifelong friends.  Austin served in the US Army at Ft. Campbell and Jacob is scheduled to serve there as well.  She was a strong and sometimes stubborn woman with a pioneer spirit.  This gave her the strength to persevere being a single mother during her husband's multiple combat deployments.  A simple housewife she was not.  She served the United States for over 20 years by supporting her husband and boys, Austin and Jacob.

She loved farming, gardening, fishing, making butter and artisanal cheeses with the milk from her beloved Jersey cow Alice.  She enjoyed hatching baby chicks, ducks, and turkey poults, canning honeysuckle jelly and other jams.  She loved offroading, camping, and picking blackberries on a warm summer day.  She would give the shoes off her feet to help someone.  She was one of a kind and will be sorely missed by many.

In addition to her husband, children and mother, she is survived by her sister, Rachel (Cantrell) Redd of Warrenville, SC, her grandmother and grandfather, Patty and Kenny Wagner, her mother-in-law Ethel Daugherty, who lived with her, Allen's Father and step-mother, Howard and Gearline Daugherty, all of Phelps, Ky.

She died in the family home, according to her last wishes, due to cancer on Tuesday, April 14th, 2020 at 5:56 PM.

Due to the authoritarian nature of recent decisions brought on by COVID19, immediately family only will attend a viewing at the Jones & West Funeral Home.  Her body will then be cremated and interred in the family home until such a time as her life can memorialized with the customs, dignity and honor she deserves.
