Kenneth Cox Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Kenneth Ray Cox 75, of North Matewan, WV.  He passed away at his residence on February 20th, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones.  He was born May 3rd, 1948, in Williamson, WV, a loving son of the late Lafe & Lina “Cline” Cox.  In addition to his parents, Kenneth was also preceded by his children, Kenneth Ray Cox Jr., Kevin Wayne Cox, and Amanda Jolene Cox, and a host of brothers & sisters.

Kenneth was a prominent citizen of Matewan and the surrounding areas of Mingo County.  He was a Matewan City Police officer for 9 years and a member of Matewan Fire Department.  He also worked as an ambulance driver.  Kenneth attended Jackson Chapel in Virginia and Lynn Freewill Baptist Church.  He enjoyed raising his rose garden when the warm weather came.  Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, grandchildren, and his friends in Matewan.

Those surviving to honor the memory of Kenneth includes his cherished wife of 55 years, Loretta Cox of North Matewan, WV; sisters, Deanna Collins of Maynardsville, TN; special sister-in-law, Teensie Layne of Phelps, KY; special friend, Marie DeHart of Thacker, WV; Charlene Cox Smith; grandchildren, Shayla, Kailey, McKenna, Kirsten, and Gabrielle; three great grandchildren, Kashton Reign, Raelynn, and Damian.  Kenneth also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.

The family welcomes friends beginning Friday evening, February 23rd & 24th from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M. with special services Saturday night starting at 7:00 P.M. at the Jones & West Funeral Home in Phelps, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, February 25th, 2024 in the chapel with pastors, Randy Wood, Mike Dingess, and David Statton officiating.  Friends & family will serve as Pallbearers.

Interment will conclude at Varney Cemetery in Lynn, WV. 

Jones & West Funeral Home of Phelps, Kentucky will be serving the Cox family.  Online condolences may be left at our website www.joneswestfh.com.
