Otto Chapman, 89, of Phelps, KY, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center in Phelps. He was born June 21, 1928 at Kimper, KY, a son of the late Elcana & Fern Deskins Chapman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Geraldine Chapman; stepmother: Mendy Chapman; one son: Virgil L. Chapman; foster son: Bob Mullins; seven brothers: Tony, Ray, Bill, Elcana “E.C.”, Leave, Ivan, & Curly; one sister: June Sparks; step-grandson: Josh Smith.
Otto was a retired coal miner from Kentland Elkhorn Coal where he worked as a Mine Foreman. He also served as a deputy police officer for 29 years, one year under Conway, 8 Under Bill Deskins, and 20 under Fuzzy Keesee. He was a member of the UMWA and was of the Primitive Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his wife: Anna Marie Chapman; five sons; Charles A. Chapman of Michigan, Roy L. (Sandra) Chapman of Nancy, KY, Larry D. (Kathy) Chapman of Pikeville, KY, Morgan (Brenda) Chapman of Pikeville, KY, Hubert M (Cindy) Chapman of Elizabethton, TN; two daughters: Sandra (Mack) Hatfield of Beckley, WV, Brenda Bevins of Phyllis, KY; two of the best stepsons a man could have: Randy (Rickie) Smith, Mickey Smith; stepdaughter: Sandy Hunt of Feds Creek, KY; five brothers: Jack (Sharon) Chapman of Kimper, KY, Conley (Dean) Chapman of Pikeville, KY, Fon (Deloris) Chapman of Kimper, KY, Cleo Chapman of Kimper, KY, Roger (Tammy) Chapman of Greasy Creek, KY; two sisters: Genevia (Gary) McMahon, Magdalene (Ralph) Buress, & good friend: Sonny Smith, along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews, family & friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Jones & West Funeral Home Chapel with Primitive Baptist Elders officiating.
Burial will follow in the Chapman Cemetery, Sunshine Lane, Kimper, KY with Derek Chapman, Mark Stump, Russell Conn, Joey Justice, The Smith Boys & grandchildren serving as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Jones & West Funeral Home Chapel with special services nightly at 7:00 P.M.
